Clean cooking solutions in Rwanda
Cleaner cooking technologies are making a difference around the world. In Rwanda, there is a clear need for affordable cooking technology that produces less smoke and consumes fewer natural resources.
Hestian is working to increase the impact of cleaner cookstoves in Rwanda. The organization works directly with local entrepreneurs and social enterprises, providing working capital and interest free loans while facilitating skills training and job creation. Hestian stoves are affordable ($3 US) and effectively reduce household air pollution by at least 45% and the use of wood fuel by up to 60%.
Hestian’s goal is for five million people in the developing world to receive and use fuel efficient cookstoves by 2020. Nexus supports Hestian in accessing funding through carbon financing.
This project is already making a difference by:
Reducing cooking related particulate matter concentrations by 45%
Saving more then one tonne of wood per year for every stove in use
Reducing CO2 emissions by three tonnes annually in each household using an improved stove
Reaching more than 20,000 households
Buy carbon credits
Purchase carbon credits to help even more people benefit from this technology. The sale of credits supports continued research and development and the training of local producers and distributors, enabling the project to scale up its impact.
