An ambitious biogas program that is reducing carbon emissions in Vietnam by almost half a million tonnes per year has been issued an impressive 779,924 Gold Standard Voluntary Emissions Reduction credits (GS-VER).
It’s big news for carbon finance, and deserved recognition for an outstanding development initiative that is transforming waste from livestock into valuable energy source for millions of rural Vietnamese.
Run by the Biogas Program for the Animal Husbandry Sector of Vietnam and SNV Netherlands Development Organization Vietnam, the program enables families to replace traditional fossil fuels and firewood for cooking, lighting, and other income-generating activities.
As well as cutting carbon, the biogas digesters are also cutting household energy bills by up to USD120 per year, improving health, and creating jobs where they’re needed most.
