It was an honor for Nexus for Development to participate in this week’s National Consultation Workshop for the Empower: Women for Climate-Resilient Societies Project, jointly implemented by UNEP and UN Women. Over the last year both our Clean Energy Project Manager Sarou Long and our Business Development Lead Paul Raguenes have worked closely with the National Committee for Sub-National Democratic Development (NCDD), UN Environment Programme (UNEP), UN Women, and women community leaders to scope and lay the foundations for jointly designed interventions that will scale both the integration of renewable energy technologies into the current livelihoods of women, and to support capacity building and knowledge development for the greater dissemination of clean energy solutions. The geographic focus of the scoping studies and pre-feasibility studies were Pursat and Takeo provinces in Cambodia.
During the National Consultation, which was well attended by various ministries , provincial departments, community organizations , Nexus presented to representatives of sub-national government, UNEP and community leaders from Takeo and Pursat provinces a shortlist of potential livelihood options ranked based on viability after taking into account baseline factors such as potential for bring economic benefits, time saved for women, existing skills, access to credit, preexisting knowledge, and early stages of cost benefit analysis.
We are excited to have identified a scope for leveraging renewable energy technology to support improved livelihoods for women in Cambodia. We are looking forward to work closely with UNEP and relevant stakeholders in the project feasibility study and future implementation as well.
