Technical expertise, the driving force for low-carbon project development

The role played by technical experts in low carbon project development from certification to credits issuances.

To support the great traction for carbon offsetting, and mitigate the impact and greenwashing risks, certifiers like ours, Gold Standard, are working hard on developing tools and strengthening their methodologies to ensure transparency and accountability. Our technical team is participating actively in the public consultations run by Gold Standard, to ensure that projects interests are well served, and all components have been considered. Their active contribution is important as they facilitate the development of global standards that apply locally. They are a field partner for international institutions as well as the project voices facilitating access to the carbon market.

Gold Standard recently released two new methodologies on the clean cooking and water projects that our technical team is now applying for the upcoming carbon credits issuances.
Apart from being able to take on the ever-changing standards and methodology, their technical expertise is also key to streamline the MRV processes and guarantee yearly issuances, and down the line revenues, for the project to scale.

Our Technical Services Managers, Chanvibol Meng and Ha Hoang Thanh, have been managing technical services for carbon projects for over 10 years. They tell us more about their work at Nexus.

Nexus: What are you most excited about carbon projects?

Vibol: Carbon projects are mostly related to the low carbon technology which is always excited to work with as an engineer. The projects provide impactful solutions to the communities for example access to clean water or energy. These projects also provide an opportunity to learn from new methodologies to assess their eligibility under carbon standards (CDM or Gold Standard).

Ha: In the carbon projects, many aspects from environment, social and economic as well as technology must be considered and assessed according to the carbon standard requirement. It makes the projects being trustable and additional in their contribution to the sustainable development goals.

N: What do you see as the main challenges and opportunities within the carbon market these days?

H: The challenges lie in the carbon prices as well as the unpredictable market demand. However, it will be the opportunities to become the market leaders if we develop the innovative solution and products.

N: How do you see Nexus thriving in this sector? What would be the key success factors for Nexus as a low-carbon project developer?

V: In just over 10 years, Nexus actively promoted low-carbon projects in Southeast Asia, registering 10 carbon projects and successfully issuing more than 4 million Gold Standard VERs credits which is significant among the carbon project developers. Nexus’ ability to combine different fund schemes to bring financing opportunities to projects as well as the technical capacity to develop them successfully as carbon projects has been instrumental and will remain the key success factor for the years to come.
