Nexus for Development is an international not-for-profit organization founded on the principles of sustainable development. Through our work we seek to support entrepreneurs across Asia to bridge the financing and knowledge gaps, fostering the growth of low-carbon clean energy and water solutions.
Nexus leverages market-based financing tools to lend to enterprises who fall into the ‘missing middle’ of the lending pyramid. The markets and sectors in which Nexus operates are dynamic and are far from homogenous. Our work is informed by pilot funds that explore new and innovative solutions to provide adequate support to the ecosystem and prime examples of our work are highlighted below.
Over the last decade, we have developed extensive market knowledge and an understanding that access to finance is not an isolated solution to fostering growth. The importance of providing technical services and capacity building are core elements as well.

Purpose
Grant funding from foundations, governments, international development agencies, or corporations are used to fund a myriad of activities including:

South-south knowledge sharing between entrepreneurs
Research on financial solutions available for entrepreneurs and implementers

With the support of our key partners, Nexus has achieved the following successes that we are eager to build upon with your support.
Project examples
With support from the French Facility for Global Environment (FFEM), Nexus delivered multiple activities and key initiatives such as the Pioneer Facility;
With support from the United Nations Foundation, Nexus has managed the project sourcing for the Clean Cooking Fund in partnership with Clean Cooking Alliance (GACC);
With support from the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, Nexus delivered the initial stage of the Leveraging Innovative Finance Together program;
With support from Wisions, an initiative of the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment, and Energy, Nexus delivered two knowledge exchange and capacity-building events, as well as a regional mapping of financiers in the renewable energy and WASH sectors;
With support from the Economic Development Board of Singapore (EDB), Nexus delivered a comprehensive program of NGO and stakeholder engagement based in SE Asia, headquartered out of Singapore;
With support from KfW, Nexus developed a Program of Activities under the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM). The key objective was to support projects that apply gasification technology for mechanical energy generation in rice milling facilities and other industries in Cambodia;
With support from EEP Mekong and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Finland, alongside our partner organization Nexus conducted a feasibility study on improving livelihoods of subsistence rice farmers in Cambodia through innovative agricultural methods and cooperative rice milling model.
Nexus Key Milestones
- Launched two climate finance funds which have facilitated access to USD 7.5 million over the past 5 years;
- Successfully showcased the feasibility of non-collateralized energy loans for farmers wanting to switch to renewable energy with a pilot fund in Cambodia;
- Launched the Pioneer Facility, a blended finance impact fund with investments in growth stage enterprises delivering impact across the energy, water, or sanitation sectors;
- Continues to support over 50 enterprises and NGOs through financing or direct project engagement;
- Engaged almost 500 enterprises and NGOs in various knowledge activities;
- Strong track record of project sourcing and monitoring with over 80 projects and businesses screened and 36 submitted to a full due diligence process.
